Technically, the 2014 Sorento represents a mid-cycle freshening; the previous generation made its appearance for the 2011 model year. But even though the Kia marketing people refrain from employing the term all-new, the 2014 Sorento rolls into showrooms with a list of revisions that's much more extensive than the usual facelift. All told, Kia reckons the Sorento's new or re-engineered content at 80 percent.
The 2014 Kia Sorento benefits from cosmetic updates front and rear, a new V6 engine option, a chassis sufficiently re-engineered to be characterized as new, a new electric steering system, a number of suspension revisions, improved braking, upgraded interior appointments, and new infotainment and telematics.
Like every vehicle in this class, the Sorento is a unibody design, basically front-wheel drive with an all-wheel drive option.
Although it continues to offer the smaller Sportage, Kia targets the Sorento against the compact crossover crowd, where it has a size advantage. The Kia Sorento is substantially bigger than the Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Mazda CX-5, and Toyota RAV4. Sorento's larger size pays roominess dividends.
The 2014 Sorento continues to offer the option of a three-row, seven-passenger configuration. However, adding the third row consumes a bit of cargo space and continues to be very snug in terms of third-row leg room. Kia and Mitsubishi are now the only players in this segment to offer a third-row option. We think Sorento is better as a two-row, five-passenger vehicle.
The 2014 Sorento's new V6 engine is a rare option in this class. The Mitsubishi Outlander is the only competitor with a V6 option. Kia's 3.3-liter V6 uses direction injection to produce 290 horsepower, 252 pound-feet. The new 3.3-liter V6 replaces the previous 3.5-liter V6. Fuel economy for the 3.3-liter V6 is an EPA-estimated 18/25 mpg City/Highway, 18/24 mpg with all-wheel drive. It comes with a 6-speed automatic. Regular gasoline is recommended for all models, so no need to buy Premium gas.
Only the base Sorento LX comes with a four-cylinder engine. New for 2012, the 2.4-liter four-cylinder with GDI direct injection is rated at 191 horsepower, 181 pound-feet of torque. (The previous port-injected 2.4-liter four has been dropped.) Fuel economy for the 2014 Sorento LX with 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 6-speed automatic is an EPA rated 20/26 mpg City/Highway, 19/24 mpg with all-wheel drive. Although the V6 option adds $1600 to the bottom line, it doesn’t carry much of a fuel economy penalty, especially when all-wheel drive is ordered.
Structural improvements to the 2014 Sorento include what Kia calls an all-new chassis, with a subframe supporting the strut front suspension, stiffened front strut towers, larger bushings in the multilink rear suspension, and a higher percentage of high strength steel throughout the bodyshell. Kia engineers cite an 18 percent increase in torsional rigidity, an area of chassis construction where more is always better, contributing to more precise handling and first rate crashworthiness. Kia expects that the Sorento will once again score top marks in the latter category.
The inner Sorento has also received comprehensive attention, with higher grade materials throughout, a redesigned instrument panel, an electric steering system that affords the option (Flex Steer) of three driver operating presets, and of course enough electronic connectivity to connect with colonies on Mars the minute they're established.
Hyundai and Kia have made huge strides with quality, and the Sorento has the feel of solid goods. And like other products from the two companies, which are joined at the hip, the Sorento comes to market with a goodly list of standard features even in basic LX editions.

Kia

2014 Kia Sorento

MSRP:

$99,590

Larger than before, it improves upon on the first-generation MDX (2001-2006), which had a unique combination of style, design, utility, and a rock-solid powertrain. The MDX balances power and fuel economy well. All that made it very popular among mid-size luxury SUVs. Given last year's complete redesign, there are only a few minor changes for 2008.
For 2008, the MDX adds a new auto dimming Day/Night rear view mirror; updates to the navigation and real-time traffic systems; a new exterior paint color choice of Sterling Gray Metallic; and a taupe interior is now available with the Aspen White Pearl exterior.
The Acura MDX is built on a truck platform, not on an adaptation of a passenger car platform. It is among the largest vehicles in its class, offering lots of space for folks and cargo. From its wild grille to its elaborately stylish cat's-eye headlamps to its huge new taillamps, it has a more muscular look compared to the original, especially in the areas around the tires. Sporty styling cues include the big, fat dual exhaust tips that look like they belong on a V8, and the hefty five-spoke alloy wheels.
The seats are laid out in three rows of two but can offer seating for up to seven people. The 10-way driver and 8-way front passenger power seats allow huge adjustment latitude for long-distance comfort for drivers of many different sizes.
Its rigid structure is beneficial for ride and handling as well as tightness, which should prove beneficial as the vehicle ages.
It has a large, powerful V6 engine, combined with a five-speed manual-shift automatic transmission. Inside, there is an organic, unified presentation of instruments and controls, a more involving scheme for the driver that should be appreciated by moms and dads alike.
We found the MDX quiet and quick, with nicely weighted steering. The active damper system that comes on the Sport model makes driving the MDX more fun, with a flatter ride and less body roll in the corners. The driver can select between sport and comfort modes for sharper handling or a softer ride. The navigation system, satellite radio, iPod input jack and Bluetooth phone synching make it easy and fun to go down the road.
The Acura MDX competes with the BMW X5, Volvo XC90, Lexus RX 350, Mercedes-Benz ML 350. Acura hopes the new MDX will appeal to women who want a sports car but need an SUV.

(The BMW 1 Series has been available in Europe and other markets for more than a year in three-door hatchback and five-door hatchback body styles.)
The 1 Series is currently offered with two diesel and three gasoline engines in most markets, but initially the U.S. will get only the full-dress, high-performance coupe, the BMW 135i, which offers more than 300 horsepower. This will be followed later on by a slightly less frenetic BMW 128i with a 230-hp inline-6 engine and nearly all of the same amenities as the 135i will have, for about $5000 less.
The 1 Series is about seven inches shorter overall than the next car up in the lineup, the popular 3 Series. The 1 Series wheelbase is four inches shorter than that of the 3 Series, and it's slightly narrower in width. The 1 Series is meant to be a serious, sporty competitor to all the front-wheel-drive Japanese, Korean, and domestic cars in the entry luxury coupe class. BMW brings its highly developed rear-wheel-drive platform to the fight.
In many ways, the 1 Series is nothing more or less than a scaled-down coupe version of the 3 Series two-door coupe, with similar looks, similar equipment and similar performance and handling because it uses many of the same components and systems, including the big twin-turbocharged engine that was introduced last year in the 335i, so the 135i is a smaller, lighter package with the same engine for about $4000 less starting money, said to be starting around $35,000.
The 1 Series convertibles will feature soft tops expected to be of the level of quality of the previous-generation 3 Series, which is to say top quality with three-layer sound insulation.

Just a few years ago a small SUV was almost an oxymoron, then Toyota and Honda hit the market with the RAV4 and the CR-V, both of which became hits. Ford followed soon after with the Escape, which quickly became the top-selling small SUV.
Now Hyundai enters the fray with the very well equipped 2005 Tucson, offering a viable alternative to the established models.
As one would expect off a vehicle from Hyundai, the Tucson is attractively priced with the best warranty in the business. It's no barnstormer as far as performance goes but then neither are most of its competitors.
Tucson comes standard with an impressive list of safety features. Electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes, and traction control are all standard. Add to that six airbags, including side-impact airbags and curtain airbags designed to provide head protection for passengers in both rows. The Tucson is the lowest cost vehicle with that level of safety features.
Bigger is better? Many might disagree with this statement and the Hyundai Tucson sets out to prove the point.

It vies for the title of most innovative pickup.
Think of Honda's best attributes, then apply them to a pickup truck. We mean qualities like refinement, fit-and-finish and innovation the Honda way. The Ridgeline features an easy-to-reach, locking storage box under its bed that no other pickup can match. Other companies have been building pickups for 100 years, and none of them had thought to try this storage system.
Yet the differences between Ridgeline and more conventional pickups go all the way to the core. Ridgeline is the first mainstream pickup with fully independent rear suspension, which improves ride quality considerably. Other pickup trucks have traditionally been built with a separate nose section, cab section, and cargo bed, bolted to a separate ladder frame. Honda's pickup uses both a one-piece unibody and a steel ladder frame, welded together. Its cab and bed are built as one piece, with separate subframes for the engine, front suspension and rear suspension. Honda claims Ridgeline is 20 times more resistant to twisting than any other pickup truck, and 3.5 times more resistant to bending.
We can't swear by those figures, but we assure you that the Ridgeline is one of the nicest pickups we've driven, measured by comfort and ease of use. It's smooth, quiet and very maneuverable, with a load of useful features. While it can't do the work of some full-size pickups, its 1550-pound payload and 5000-pound towing capacity are more than enough for many buyers.
For 2007, Honda introduces the value-priced Ridgeline RTX model, which adds popular equipment such as alloy wheels and a trailer hitch for a nominal price increase compared to the base RT model. At the high end of the line, the 2007 Ridgeline RTL adds a power moonroof and XM Satellite Radio as standard equipment.
The Honda Ridgeline doesn't look or act like any other pickup truck we've driven, and it shouldn't cost an arm and a leg to own or operate. It makes pleasant, comfortable daily transportation, and it's as much pickup as many drivers will ever need.

While technically a midsize car, it's on the large side of that scale and boasts a a high seating position and lots of legroom for both front and rear passengers.
The Montego is powered by a 203-hp V6. Front-wheel drive is standard. All-wheel drive is available for improved traction and handling in adverse conditions. The Montego was carefully engineered to protect occupants in the event of an accident. Safety engineers from Volvo worked directly on the Montego, drawing on the Swedish automaker's 50 years of advanced safety engineering.
The Montego offers one of the roomiest interiors in its class. Inspired by the ubiquitous sport utility vehicle, the Montego gives the driver a relatively high seating position and, consequently, excellent outward vision.
Its all-aluminum V6 engine features drive-by-wire electronic throttle control and is complemented by a six-speed automatic transmission that shifts smoothly and always seems to choose the right gear for the driving situation. The all-wheel-drive models come with a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that's smooth and responsive and enhances fuel efficiency.
The steering and suspension are European in feel, offering quick response and minimal lean in corners. The brakes are excellent, responding quickly when the pedal is pressed and slowing the car quickly when necessary. Anti-lock brakes are standard on all Montegos, and all-speed traction control is standard on all but the base, front-drive model, where it's a no-cost option.
Montego excels in passive safety as well. Its basic structure was designed by Volvo, a company that built its reputation on safety before safety was fashionable. Add to that Ford Motor Company's Personal Safety System, which means that the inflation rate for the dual-stage front airbags is managed by a crash severity sensor and a weight sensor for the front-seat passenger. Side-impact and canopy-style airbags are optional. Thus equipped, Montego has earned top five-star ratings in frontal and side-impact crash testing by the federal government, and was named a best pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for frontal crash performance.

Mazda fused the personality of the British sports cars of the 1950s and 1960s with near-faultless Japanese quality and reliability. From the first one out the door, the Miata delivered what the long-gone but still lamented English sports cars of an earlier generation had never quite managed: a delightful, fun, supremely capable, well-engineered car that started every time and ran forever. There are more Miatas on racetracks every weekend around the country than any other car.
It's been thoroughly updated twice, including a full remake in 2006. Quality, solidity and safety gear were upgraded in the 2006 re-do, but its lighthearted spirit was kept intact. This is a car to love.
Mazda is now downplaying the Miata name in favor of the alpha-numeric MX-5 moniker; apparently, this is intended to make emphasize the Mazda brand name.
For 2007, there are a few small changes and one major addition to the lineup that broadens both the MX-5's appeal and usefulness. The eye-opener is a new model featuring what Mazda calls the Power Retractable Hard Top, or PRHT, which features a solid roof that lowers in seconds at the touch of a button, just like those found on pricey two-seaters from Mercedes and Cadillac. It provides the advantages of a hardtop overhead, with reduced wind and road noise and a sense of increased security and solidity, yet folds down completely out of sight for stylish cruising. What's more, not a whit of the standard MX-5's delicious driving experience has been sacrificed by the addition of hardtop practicality.
Affordability has always been a cornerstone of Miata ownership, but over time more models and options have proliferated. The list now stretches to two basic body styles, across which spreads five exterior and interior trim packages, a more sporting suspension and a dozen stand alone options. All this can plump up the sticker to the $28,000 range. But choose wisely and you'll still get a rewarding sports car at an enticing price.
The MX-5 Miata, soft top or hard top, still puts a big grin on your face whether you're on a twisty road or just cruising down to the hardware store to pick up some molly bolts. Fun is what the Mazda MX-5 made its reputation on, and that's exactly what it delivers. Mission accomplished.

In addition, the popular Stow 'n Go seating arrangement, which has second-row seats that fold into the floor, becomes standard on the base model.
The Town & Country also offers Swivel 'n Go, which includes second-row seats that rotate 180 degrees to face a removable table that stores in the floor. With these seating arrangements, Chrysler bills the Town & Country as the ultimate family friendly vehicle, and we agree.
The 2009 Chrysler Town & Country is offered with three V6 engines. The base engine, a 3.3-liter V6, lacks power and isn't very fuel efficient. The 3.8-liter V6 is adequate for around-town duty, but the best choice is the available 4.0-liter V6. This engine is more competitive with the V6 offerings from other manufacturers, and it moves the T&C nicely.
On the road, the 2009 Chrysler Town & Country offers a smooth ride and an SUV-like view of the road. The Town & Country is a big vehicle, however, and it is not nimble. It is prone to body lean in turns and the ride can feel floaty at highway speeds. The Honda Odyssey and Nissan Quest are more car-like and sportier.
On the other hand, the Town & Country's entertainment and seating options are the best in the class, matched only by the Dodge Grand Caravan. The standard Stow 'n Go seating tucks the second-row seats nicely into the floor, and when those seats are up, the floor bins offer storage space. The rear seats fold into the floor on all models, allowing a perfectly flat, voluminous rear storage area that can accommodate items such as couches, 4x8-foot sheets of plywood, and most any other item you might need to transport. In addition, there is a handy well behind the third row that offers lots of storage space even with the seats up.
The Swivel 'n Go option is great for family trips. The second row turns to face the third row with a table in between. It helps keep the kids entertained with games of checkers, a place to draw, or any number of other possibilities. And if that's not enough, the Town & Country offers single and dual screen rear DVD entertainment systems, plus Sirius Backseat TV with three kid-friendly channels. The dual screens allow different viewing options for kids that can't agree on what to watch. And for the adults up front, Chrysler's UConnect hard-drive radio stores hundreds of songs.
In addition to the new safety options, Chrysler has updated the brake system for 2009 to reduce noise, vibration and harshness. New SmartBeam headlights that dim automatically are available, and Chrysler has added more equipment to the base model. The equipment shuffling has increased the base price considerably (almost $4000), so the Town & Country is no longer an inexpensive choice.
Overall, however, the 2009 Town & Country does what a minivan should. It is a great vehicle for families that need to haul kids and cargo on a regular basis. And the seating and entertainment options will prevent a lot of the fights that inevitably accompany road trips. Pricing can exceed $40,000 with all the options, so carefully consider which you'll need and use before you buy.

Chrysler

2009 Chrysler Town & Country

MSRP:

$20,360

Four doors, sufficient power, and room for five make it a highly prudent source of transportation in which to haul around one's 2.3 tykes for 18 years. (Of course it will last that long - the Camry is one robust ride.) Sadly, high school must end sometime, and shipping junior after junior off to Higher Learning inevitably leaves a hole in the nest.

It also leaves a hole in the back seat. Soon after, it hits you that with those brats out of your hair, you don't need a soul-starved sedan anymore. It's time to indulge, to go crazy, to relive a time when you lived for no one else. So you take your Camry and hack off that oppressive roof.

For those who want it done professionally, Toyota now offers incomplete Camrys fresh from the factory under the moniker Solara (officially the "Camry Solara" to help Toyota maintain the Best-Selling Car title). The company hopes all those post-parentals see this topless two-door Toyota as the perfect way to hold on to all the brand's virtues while providing a little escapism (and looking good, too).

So here we are with the second-generation Solara, now bigger, better, and built in Kentucky alongside its four-door brethren. Toyota seems to be on the German timetable of releasing two-door versions two years later, so even with the 2007 Camry bowing this spring, this new-for-2004 Solara will stick around in present form for a few more years.

With such a comprehensive round of innovations at the time - new look, new engines, new Continuously Variable Transmission, new convertible - you'd think its expiration date would be set far into the future. But if it's surprising to see Audi executing a mid-life update that nearly qualifies for a new generation after three years, well, maybe it shouldn't be. When you've got Infiniti and Acura on your tail, you gotta act fast.

2005's changes start with the visual. Fresh taillights combine with Audi's gigantic I'm-going-to-eat-you grille to ensure that you'll now confuse the A4 with other Audis from the front instead of the back. The fun went from seeing an A4 come to seeing it go.

And there is more fun in going. 2005 sees the most aggressive year-over-year engine boosts, with the turbocharged 1.8-liter 4 becoming a 2.0 and the 2.8-liter V6 increasing to 3.1. It gets a lot more technical than that, however, and in addition to more go, the A4 gets more stop and steer. The once-vast model lineup has decreased in diversity but still stands with five different drivetrain combinations; my experience reflects one of them.

Properly equipped, Aviator can tow up to 7,300 pounds, significantly more than most imported SUVs in its size class.
The Aviator's mission is to deliver the style of the Lincoln Navigator in a smaller, more manageable, and less expensive package. Aviator lists for about $8,700 less than Navigator. Aviator is also priced lower than most V8-powered luxury sport-utilities. Aviator costs less than a Lexus GX 470, Mercedes-Benz ML 500, Infiniti FX45, and less than the V8 versions of the Cadillac SRX and Volkswagen Touareg. Aviator is also priced just below the six-cylinder BMW X5 3.0.
All-new last year, the Lincoln Aviator returns for 2004 with more options to enhance safety. Electronic stability control, which Ford calls AdvanceTrac, together with a new system called Roll Stability Control, reduce the chance of skidding and to help drivers maintain handling control. A tire-pressure monitoring system is now standard. The voice-activated DVD navigation system has been improved and refined, and now comes with an in-dash six-disc CD changer.

The Silverado was lavished with product awards when it was redesigned for 2007. The 2008 models brought some additional features and refinement. For 2009, all the major changes are under the hood for 2009.
Silverado styling is bold by GM truck standards yet still traditional when compared with the latest pickups from Dodge, Nissan, Toyota, and Ford. We like the clean, bold look.
The Silverado is available in more ways than starlets misbehave, with three cabs, three beds, five engines (nine if you count all the 5.3-liter derivatives), three transmissions, and five suspension setups on four wheelbase lengths. The key is knowing which bits go on which trucks because little more than bow-tie badges and front fenders are shared amongst all of them.
For 2009, additional upgrades include a rearview camera system, a navigation system, updated wheels, OnStar 8.0 with turn-by-turn navigation and destination download, Bluetooth, and XM radio with real-time traffic information.
The Chevy Silverado is highly capable for towing or hauling, the amounts of which vary by model, of course. Your choice of a Silverado may come down to style, fit, the right equipment and options or simply brand loyalty, but choosing the right Silverado is more important than choosing a Silverado over another brand. So choose carefully.
Engines include one V6 and four V8s, plus a hybrid. The base setup is a 4.3-liter V6 (195 hp/260 lb-ft of torque) with four-speed automatic, offered only on regular cabs and 2WD extended cab short or standard bed. The integrated trailer brake controller and enhanced stability control are not available with the 4.3-liter. The 4.8-liter V8 (295 hp/305 lb-ft of torque) and four-speed automatic are standard on Crew Cab and 4WD extended cab short or standard bed and many LT models.
The 5.3-liter V8 comes in four states of tune, all at 315 hp and 338 lb-ft of torque, with active fuel management that shuts off cylinders to save fuel, iron or aluminum block, and available flex-fuel operation is standard on most LTZ models; some will have four-speed automatics while the six-speed is phased in. A 6.0-liter aluminum block V8 (367 hp/375 lb-ft of torque) with variable cam timing and active fuel management is available on long-cab LT and LTZ models in conjunction with the NHT maximum tow package. The six-speed automatic is being phased in as standard.
XFE (Xtra fuel economy) models use a 5.3-liter V8, six-speed automatic and cruising-biased axle ratio of 3.08:1 to increase EPA ratings. XFE versions feature aerodynamic upgrades in the form of a soft bed cover and extended front air dam, plus aluminum wheels (including the spare) and lower front suspension arms, locking rear differential, and low rolling resistance tires. A trailering package is standard so XFE models can tow up to 7000 pounds.
New for 2009 is the 6.2-liter V8 (403 hp/417 lb-ft of torque), a flex-fuel engine with aluminum block and variable cam timing and a six-speed automatic. It is offered only on Crew Cab models and returns 13/19 mpg EPA ratings with premium unleaded recommended.
The other new power option for 2009 is the two-mode Hybrid that debuted in the 2008 Tahoe and Yukon. This Crew Cab uses a slightly detuned 6-liter V8 (332 hp/367 lb-ft of torque), battery pack, and four-speed automatic with the two electric motors in it. EPA ratings are 21/22 mpg. Tow ratings are available to 6100 pounds, maximum payload is in the 1400-pound range.

Chevrolet

2009 Chevrolet Silverado

MSRP:

$29,330

The performance of the Jaguar compares favorably to these cars, while offering a distinct difference in feel and temperament. The X-Type is elegant, comfortable, and fun to drive. Starting at $29,330, it represents a low cost of entry for a Jaguar and a strong value in this highly competitive class. It also gives its owner the distinction of driving a Jag.
The X-Type looks unmistakably like a Jaguar, and that's no small design feat given its relatively compact dimensions. Better still, the X-Type smells and feels like a Jaguar, with all the traditional British ingredients that have defined the brand for seven decades. Yet this $30,000 Jag is more than an inexpensive knock-off because it offers something no other Jaguar has: the benefits of full-time all-wheel-drive. That makes the X-Type a good choice for rain, snow and ice, and indeed it feels very secure in those conditions.
For 2004, Jaguar delivers the first significant changes since the X-Type was introduced two years ago. There are new colors and new, larger wheel designs. Inside, the X-Type gets a new wood veneer that Jaguar calls Sapele, and claims it offers the most powerful premium stereo in the class. Option packages have been re-aligned, and perhaps most significantly, the X-Type's price-value equation has been improved. The less-expensive 2004 X-Type 2.5-liter actually costs $620 less than when the car was launched in the fall of 2001. The high-trim X-Type 3.0-liter is nearly $3,000 less than last year. With new standard equipment, Jaguar says the 3.0 represents a savings of $5,200 compared to 2003.
The Jaguar X-Type is a great alternative to some superb luxury sedans.

Using the vaguely familiar aliases of Swift, Esteem, (Chevrolet) Sprint, and (Geo) Metro, Suzuki has so far been content aiming for the bottom of the market. Not that it matters much; most of Suzuki's riches come from its line of much-respected sport bikes and from foreign nations with high demand for super economical cars (that would be all of them).

New millennium, new attitude. The 2010 Tundra models feature a new grille design and redesigned taillights. Also new for 2010 is the availability of a smaller, more fuel-efficient V8. Refinements for 2010, including adjustable headlights, improve on an excellent truck.
We've found the Tundra to be a stable, comfortable truck for towing a 20-foot enclosed car trailer over long distances. Towing capacities top 10,000 pounds on some models, and maximum payload ratings reach 2,000 pounds.
Tundra comes in three body styles: Regular Cab with two doors; Double Cab with conventional front-hinged, secondary rear side doors; and CrewMax with four full-size doors. Seating is available for two, three, five or six. Three bed lengths and three wheelbases are available.
Trim levels range from basic Tundra Grade to luxurious Limited models with leather upholstery, and from the lowest end to the highest is a price differential of around 2:1. But even the base models are loaded with useful features, including tons of interior storage options, an easy-lift assisted tailgate and four-wheel disc brakes. High-end models are available with GPS navigation and a rearview camera, or a rear-seat entertainment with a 9-inch LCD screen. An available deck rail system in the bed anchors moveable tie-down cleats rated at 220 pounds each.
For 2010, a new 4.6-liter dohc V8 engine is available. Rated at 310 horsepower and 327 pound-feet of torque, and with EPA fuel-economy ratings of 15/20 mpg City/Highway, the 4.6-liter V8 not only has a lot more power than the V6, but better fuel economy, as well. As with the 5.7-liter engine, the 4.6-liter has dual Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence (VVT-i), which optimizes valve timing for the best combination of performance, economy and emissions. It is matched with a six-speed automatic transmission. Toyota expects the 4.6-liter V8 to offer the best combination of power and fuel economy of any standard V8 in the full-size truck segment.
The 5.7-liter V8 engine carries over. With 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque and a six-speed automatic transmission, Tundra boasts one of the strongest, most responsive powertrains in the class. The dohc 5.7-liter is an excellent choice for towing trailers, and has entirely reasonable EPA fuel-economy ratings of 14/18 mpg City/Highway.
A 4.0-liter V6 engine, with 236 horsepower and EPA ratings of 15/19 mpg City/Highway, is the entry-level low-cost choice. It's available only with two-wheel-drive versions of the Regular Cab or Double Cab, and it makes only slightly better economy than the 5.7-liter V8.
The 2010 Tundra offers two new trim levels, a Platinum Package and a Work Truck. The Platinum Package will be available on Crewmax Limited models with the 5.7-liter V8 and Flex Fuel powertrains. On the outside, the Platinum Package includes a billet-style grille, chrome bumpers, unique 20-inch alloy wheels and tires, daytime running lamps, door-sill protectors with a Platinum logo, and Platinum badging. Inside, it includes a power memory function on the driver's seat, outside power mirrors and puddle lamps, and a power tilt-telescoping steering wheel. Also included is a power moonroof, navigation, ventilated seats with a unique perforated leather surface, wood-trimmed shift knob and door switch plates, automatic up/down power windows, chrome accented vents, and headrests with an embroidered Platinum logo.
The Work Truck Package will be available with Regular Cab and Double Cab models, in two-wheel or four-wheel drive, and with standard or long-bed configurations, and with any of the three engines. It will have black bumpers and grille surround and power mirrors will be replaced by manually controlled outside mirrors. Inside will be washable vinyl seats and rubber floors, and several trim and convenience items have been deleted, including cruise control and remote keyless entry, and gauges will be replaced by warning lamps. The idea is to offer to commercial buyers a work truck at a reduced price.
For 2010, all Tundra models receive a new look with a freshened grille and taillamp design. All 2010 Tundra models will have driver and front-passenger knee airbags as standard equipment. Also new for 2010: height-adjustable headlamps, which addresses a gripe we had with previous models. Previous models did not allow any aiming of the headlights, posing a problem when towing a trailer or hauling a heavy load. A shelf to help organize storage space has been added to the lower glovebox, and a new seven-pin hitch connector sits above the hitch to help avoid damage when going over dips and bumps. Two new audio systems are available on 2010 Tundra models: The Tech Audio system features AM/FM/CD, integrated satellite radio receiver, Bluetooth, auxiliary and USB inputs and six speakers, while another system includes AM/FM/CD, auxiliary input, a backup camera and six speakers.

Toyota

2010 Toyota Tundra

MSRP:

$23,560

The Mariner is based on the superb Ford Escape.
The Mariner has a bit more truck-style flair than some of its competitors; its ride height and seating position, for example, are higher than that of the Honda CR-V or Nissan Rogue, and it can tow up to 3,500 pounds, which is substantially more than most vehicles in the class. Still, the Mariner delivers the advantages of other unit-body, car-based SUVs such as the CR-V. The Mariner is more car-like on the road than the Jeep Liberty, for example. Its smooth ride and reasonably agile handling make for pleasant driving, and its compact dimensions make it easy to maneuver and park.
The Mariner offers comfortable seating for four, or five in a pinch. Folding the rear seats opens a good-sized cargo area with a flat floor, and space behind the seat surpasses that in the trunk of a typical sedan. The finish is upscale and pleasing, and feature function and switches are among the best. Standard safety features include AdvanceTrac electronic stability control with Roll Stability Control.
The base four-cylinder engine is adequate, if not particularly exciting, and all variants, including the V6 and Mariner Hybrid, deliver good fuel economy ratings compared to the competition.
The Hybrid drives like a conventional Mariner, for the most part, and demands little additional effort or knowledge from the driver in exchange for improved mileage. Like other Mariners, the gas-electric Hybrid is offered with either front- or all-wheel drive. The Hybrid models are powered by a more fuel-efficient, 153-hp Atkinson Cycle version of the four-cylinder engine that works in concert with a 70-kilowatt electric motor, all coupled to an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission. Unlike some mild hybrid SUVs, the Mariner Hybrid can run on 100 percent electric power up to about 25 mph.
In line with a plan to rejuvenate the Mercury brand, the Mariner is intended to offer a step up in status over the Ford Escape. Yet it's worth noting that the Escape can be equipped identically to the Mariner, and with the same level of features the prices are essentially the same. In either case, a leather-upholstered V6 4WD, with premium audio, navigation, dual-zone climate control and other options will be over $30,000. At the higher end of the product line, the differences between the Mariner and the Escape really come down to styling details.
For 2010 the changes are worthwhile but not major in nature. An Integrated Blind Spot Mirror, MyKey programmable vehicle key, Rear View Camera System, and Active Park Assist are now available, and the Mariner also features hands-free SYNC with Traffic, Directions & Information. All the features improve safety, reduce driver distractions and help drivers on the road.

Mercury

2010 Mercury Mariner

MSRP:

$33,250

Essentially luxurious versions of the Nissan Z, all excel at driving dynamics. And all are powered by Nissan's 3.7-liter V6, an engine with a distinctive sound that revs freely and puts out a lot of power.
The G37 interior is lively and friendly without being fussy or overly busy. The overall quality of the passenger cabins has increased with this latest generation, and they're much better suited to the luxury class than they once were. The G37s are priced lower than some European competitors, with more standard equipment. They're a great place for performance-minded buyers to start shopping.
For 2009, there are lots of significant updates across the G37 line. All models are now equipped with a new, larger 3.7-liter V6 introduced in the G37 Coupe for 2008, and horsepower increases across the line. The standard automatic transmission has been upgraded from five to seven speeds, and EPA mileage ratings increase one mpg city, two mpg highway as a result. The Coupe is now available with full-time all-wheel-drive, offering buyers in tough-winter climates an extra element of mobility, security and safety.
The biggest news for 2009 is introduction of the G37 Convertible, featuring a retractable steel hardtop. The Convertible is the only G37 body style not offered with all-wheel drive.
All G37s come standard with rear drive, which delivers handling characteristics front-wheel drive can't usually match. All models are available with a six-speed manual transmission that's increasingly rare in this class; the new seven-speed automatic is tuned for sporting response, with available steering wheel paddles for manual shifting.
The engine is more powerful than that of many competitors, and it's tuned for the sort of response and excitement that enthusiast drivers prefer. This car's trademark has always been sporty driving dynamics, but Infiniti has also made strides addressing its shortcomings. Interior finish and overall smoothness have steadily improved the last several model years.
The four-door G37 is true sports sedan, reacting to driver commands in the fashion of a sport-tuned coupe. Yet it seats four comfortably in all circumstances, with easy in-out access and plenty of stowage space in the trunk.
The two-door G37 Coupe looks racier than the sedan, and it's fresh from a complete redesign for 2008. Its chassis is stiffer, lower and wider than its predecessor's, with improved ride quality and even better handling. Its instrumentation is first rate, and its climate, audio and navigation systems are easy to understand and control. Rear seat legroom is more restricted than in the sedan, however, so two adults may not be happy in the Coupe's back seat for long.
The new G37 Convertible looks a lot like the coupe, until its three-piece steel top opens at the touch of a button. Then it's a cabriolet. The Convertible comes with a Bose Open Air Sound System that automatically adjusts audio levels according to vehicle speed and ambient noise. The Convertible's climate control system also adjusts fan speed based on vehicle speed when the top is open.
The coupe and sedan are available in three trim levels, and the convertible in two. The top level is the Sport 6MT, which features the manual transmission, bigger brakes and a host of performance-enhancing features, including 19-inch high-performance tires. All G37s are offered with the high-tech features expected in this category, including adaptive bi-xenon headlights and excellent audio systems.
