'98 Chevrolet Corvette - Autotronics - Mobile Electronics

We've sung praises for the fifth-generation Corvette since it first emerged from the Bowling Green plant, applauding its superb powerplant, masterful ergonomics, and even its sonorous exhaust note. Despite the exquisite auditory sensations produced by the mechanical symphony, the real sound magic emanates from the Bose Music System.

Since the introduction of the fourth-generation Corvette in 1984, it has been impossible to talk about audio and Corvette in the same breath without also mentioning Bose. Although the Bose Music System installed in many fourth-generation Corvettes was a clear step forward in the evolution of factory-installed audio systems, to the ears of some critics, aftermarket products continued to set the pace in delivering cutting-edge sound reproduction. Much of this was attributed to the fact that the aftermarket raced simultaneously in several different directions, most notably in the areas of increased power and in the rapid adoption of CD as the source unit of choice.

For the fifth-generation Corvette, Bose engineers joined their counterparts at Chevrolet and attacked the problems of Corvette audio in a variety of ways. The resulting Bose Music System is standard in every Corvette, packed with innovative new speaker technology. Most notable is the use of full-range, two-way, 8-inch speakers mounted in each front door.

The bottom line is how good the system sounds. With the opportunity to evaluate the '98 Corvette's Bose Music System for an extended period, more than 2500 miles over the course of two weeks, there was ample opportunity for an audition. Our test vehicle was equipped with optional in-dash AM/FM/CD player mated to a trunk compartment CD changer. An AM/FM/cassette receiver is standard.

First, the system is capable of dynamic output. Through established Motor Trend test procedures, we measured the undistorted output of the Bose Music System, using an average of six musical selections and pink noise. Our measurement of 112 dB ranks it at the top of all systems measured over the past two years. Although not the quietest vehicle we've tested, with a reading of 74 dB at 60 mph with the top in place, the 38-dB differential is exceptional. With the new, easy-to-remove, one-piece top stowed in the rear, the system still had sufficient output to overcome wind noise up to 80 mph.

Even cranked at near maximum output levels, this new package impressed us with its ability to not leave the listener fatigued. Its delivery of delicate nuances of the most demanding program material is a laudable Bose hallmark.

There have been clear signs that factory-installed premium-branded audio systems, such as that installed in this Corvette, are demonstrating marked improvements in performance. Bose has led in this area. Although we rated the system installed in the Mercedes-Benz SLK as a fine performer, the Corvette system is clearly a step beyond. There are several reasons for this: larger interior cabin, better placement of the crucial front speakers, and the contribution to rear fill that the additional pair of rear speakers adds.

Two-seat vehicles, from Miatas to Ferraris, place serious obstacles in the path of outstanding sound reproduction. Bose engineers, with their early involvement in the conception of the new Corvette's interior package, were given the opportunity to seriously address these issues. From our evaluation, they succeeded at virtually every level, producing a clear winner and establishing a new benchmark system that not only sounds great within the context of other two-seat vehicles, but compares to the best factory-installed systems available in any vehicle-truly a system every bit as exciting as the Corvette itself. -R.M.
