2007 Jeep Patriot

Following up on January's reveal of the Compass is Jeep's 2007 Patriot, also based on the new front-drive Mitsubishi Lancer platform (although Chrysler is quick to say it's developed this architecture itself) and powered by a 172-horse, 2.4-liter four that's part of the World Engine family developed by Chrysler, Mitsubishi, and Hyundai.

Jeep will sell the Patriot in Europe as well as North America and says its optional Freedom Drive II off-road package makes it as Rubicon-capable as anything else in the lineup and the best-performing off-roader in its class--well, at least until Land Rover's all-new LR2 arrives.

• Freedom Drive I is an optional, active 4WD system on this front-drive-based crossover, with a lockable center coupling for deeper snow and sand.

• Freedom Drive II has a second-generation continuously variable transaxle with a low-range, CVT2L, that engages in the off-road mode, plus 17-inch all-terrain tires and aluminum wheels, a full-size spare, air-filtration system, skidplates, tow hooks, foglamps, and seat-height adjuster.

• Brake Traction Control, driver-controlled three-mode ESP, Brake Assist, Electronic Roll Mitigation, and anti-lock brakes with rough-road detection are standard on all models. Trim levels are Patriot and Patriot Limited.

• Standard 2.4-liter world engine has dual variable valve timing on intake and exhaust and is available with five-speed manual or CVT. A 2.0-liter turbodiesel four with six-speed manual is for markets outside North America.

• Side-curtain airbags are standard, and 60/40 split rear seats fold flat and recline.

• Options include nine-speaker Boston Acoustics audio with two articulating speakers in the liftgate, auxiliary audio input for MP3, self-recharging removable cargo lamp, sliding center armrest, 115-volt center-console outlet, fold-flat front passenger seat, and "YES Essentials" anti-microbial textile seats.

• Expected price under $20,000. On sale this autumn.
