2003 BMW Z4 3.0i

With the complaints piling in about the SMG gearbox, we had the dealer check it out during our first service visit. BMW issued a service campaign to replace the SMG control unit with an updated one, which we hoped would give us better results than the original. It didn't take long for the logbook to light up with fresh input. "When I learned the Z4 was in for service I hoped for the best.

I imagined its return would herald a new era of driveability, but, alas, I found it neither better nor worse. At its best, it's merely adequate; at worst, dangerous." Another entry: "SMG left me stranded in neutral no fewer than four times in three days. Each time, I had to go back to reverse then again to drive. Sometimes, I'd repeat this more than once to get first gear." The same editor also wrote, "Yet I still love this car for its avant-garde styling (especially in red), beautiful interior, quick and easy top, awesome steering, grippy suspension, strong motor, and manly sounding exhaust." Let's call it a love/hate relationship. And the haters also can choose between a six-speed manual or a conventional automatic.
