First Test: 2004 Infiniti G35x
One of our favorites sheds the winter blues

Proof is now more apparent than ever that Infiniti is committed to skimming as much as it can off the top of BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi sport-sedan sales. For 2004, Infiniti is offering an all-wheel-drive version of its G35 sedan, set to compete with the 330xi, C-Class 4-Matic, and A4 quattro.
Similar to the setup in the FX sport/utility, the ATTESA-ETS AWD system distributes torque via a lightweight electromagnetic clutch, supplying variable amounts of power to the front wheels (up to a maximum of 50 percent). Standing starts send 25 percent of drive torque to the front wheels and 75 percent to the rear. Once underway, the system can deliver 100 percent of the torque to the rear, mimicking the driving dynamics of a rear-drive car. Snow and ice launches are simplified by activating the center-console-mounted switch. This provides a permanent 50/50 torque split at speeds up to 12 mph.
All-wheel drive increases the G's ride height by a minimal 0.40 inch and adds 308 pounds to curb weight. Slalom times on all-season tires almost equaled those achieved by the last summer-tired, rear-drive G35 sedan we tested (January 2003), proving that dry-road performance is hardly compromised even with less sporty rubber.
The G35x will be offered only with an automatic trans and standard leather seats, and it costs around $1800 more than a comparably equipped 2WD G35. Adding AWD should satisfy the appetites of those who want a G but live in inclement climes, while helping Infiniti grab a few more customers from those vaunted German brands.
