2005 Land Rover Discovery LR3

The long-anticipated (we've shown a few spy photos in our "News" section) next-generation Land Rover Discovery will be out late this fall as a 2005 model. The new design is founded on an all-new four-wheel independent, electronic air suspension that allows the Land Rover LR3 (no longer named Discovery) to be wider, longer, and lower to the ground, all of which will improve everyday and extreme ride and handling.

Similar in architecture and philosophy to the revamped Range Rover, the LR3 will have an adjustable ride height and a dynamic new four-wheel-drive system, called Terrain Response, that will allow the new Land Rover to continue its class-leading 4x4 credibility. This new system is no longer lever or push-button operated, but includes a rotary switch that requires the driver to select one of five appropriate terrain settings. The vehicle's many electronic controls and traction systems are then optimized for that specific type of terrain.

In addition, with seating for seven (the independent rear suspension allows for a hideaway, fold-flat third row), a new six-speed transmission, and electronically adjustable suspension, the LR3 looks to appeal to current SUV buyers looking for fewer rugged SUV tradeoffs.

Expect the interior to be significantly larger and include many comfort and texture features that it will need to keep up with the other luxury-class SUVs. Also, expect a new 300-horsepower, all-aluminum 4.4-liter Jaguar V-8 to give the sport/ute significant throttle response as well as towing and carrying capacity. Further, although the overall look is much smoother and more aero than the previous old-school box, there's still a good hint of squared angles and large greenhouse in the LR3 to keep traditionalists happy.

We expect the LR3's price to move a small amount from the current Discovery, meaning the new Land Rover will likely start below $40,000.
