2008 Mercury Sable

Ford CEO Alan Mulally's decision to axe the Montego badge and revive the Sable name isn't the only change for the 2008 {{{Mercury Sable}}}. Look under the Sable's hood, and you'll find a new 3.5L V-6 sourced from the {{{Lincoln MKX}}}. Gone is the Montego's CVT transmission, thrown out in favor of a more conventional six-speed automatic. The new engine/transmission combination is good for 263 hp and 245 lb-ft of torque in the 2008 Sable, up from the Montego's 203 and 207, respectively.

Also new for 2008 is the availability of the popular Sync system. Designed in part by Ford and Microsoft, the system is capable of integrating most cell-phones and MP3 players directly into the vehicle's stereo system via USB and Bluetooth. If you'd rather not spend the $395 for Sync, you'll find a standard auxiliary input in the stock stereo. Also available is a voice-activated and multilanguage navigation, DVD rear-seat entertainment system, and SIRIUS Satellite Radio.

Aesthetically, the Sable remains similar to last year's model, with chrome bezels around the foglights, LED taillamps, and dual exhaust pipes emanating from the rear. There are cloth seats inside the standard trim Sable, but up for the Premier trim and you'll find upgraded two-tone leather. Also standard on the Premier are 18-in. wheels, Sync, and heated front seats.

A stability control system is available for all models, but for extra control the Sable can be equipped with all-wheel drive. According to Ford, the system is similar to that of the Mercury Mariner and can distribute torque up to 100 percent between axles. With front drive, the Sable returns 18 mpg around town and 28 mpg on the freeway. Opt for the all-wheel drive, and the added drivetrain components bring mileage down to 17 city and 24 highway mpg.

The Sable has also been designated a "Top Safety Pick" by the Institute for Highway Safety in the category of large family cars. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the Sable a maximum five-star safety rating in all crash tests. So those looking for a safe, solid and slightly more upscale version of the Ford Taurus need look no further.
