2008 Audi A8

Audi has released initial details of its revised 2008 Audi A8 lineup, with Ingolstadt's flagship receiving multiple updates and enhancements across the range, including its W-12-powered and S8 variants. The changes center on ride and handling improvements, along with subtle refinements to the exterior and interior.

The A8's rack-and-pinion steering, featuring a variable steering ratio and Servotronic power assist, has been optimized for a more direct feel. The car's adaptive suspension has been retuned, with the system's electronically controlled variable dampers fitted with new seals to reduce friction. The suspension also employs new valves and updated hydraulics -- all in an effort to further smooth out the luxo sedan's already impressive ride.

Making the A8 quieter in the cabin was another Audi focus. An insulation package has been added in an effort to reduce rolling and road noises -- all without adding to the vehicle's weight, according to the automaker.

Two new safety systems have been added to the A8 mix: side assist and lane assist.

Side assist uses intelligent radar technology to warn the driver of potential dangerous lane-changing situations. Upon detecting another vehicle that could be a hazard during a lane change, a yellow LED in the exterior mirror housing display lights up and becomes brighter and flashes more quickly if the situation gets more serious.

Lane assist uses a small camera positioned above the interior mirror on the windscreen to monitor the road ahead and feed the signal to a high-speed computer that detects the lane marking lines. If the driver moves toward one of these lines without indicating via a turn signal, the system alerts the driver via vibration in the steering wheel.

Exterior design changes made to the A8 include a modified single-frame grille, new exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals, LED taillights featuring what Audi calls a night design, and new wheel designs and paint finishes. Interior updates feature aluminum trim inserts, along with new color schemes and inlays.

The updates enhance what's already one of the most impressive luxury sedans on the market. The A8's engine options -- currently consisting of a 350 horsepower 4.2-liter V-8, 450 horsepower 6-liter W-12, and 450 horsepower 5.2-liter V-10 -- reportedly will carry over, along with the automaker's quattro all-wheel drive and MMI interior-function operating system.
