Volvo R-Design adds style, not performance to 2008, 2009 models

Volvo's performance models -- designated with an "R" -- never quite got the same response Mercedes enjoys with AMG-tweaked models and BMW gets with its M-badged cars. So for 2008 and 2009 models, Volvo is introducing an evolved R for "R-Design," an aesthetically-targeted program which is a better fit with Volvo's recent focus on style anyway.
R-Design Volvos will be covered in ten colors with color coordinated bumpers and lower side moldings. An "R-Design" badge is featured on the satin matt-finish grille while simple five-spoke aluminum wheels similar to the ones Audi offers on S line packages are offered. All R-Design Volvos are fitted with a rear spoiler and eye-catching satin matt-finish side mirrors.
Perhaps most important to the R-Design Volvos is preserving the element of exclusivity. Only 400 2008 Volvo C30 R-Design models will be available in North America -- one, Volvo says, for each dealer. The C30 R-Design gets a body kit and big exhaust tips, but no powertrain changes.
Volvo did not forget about the interior. Like other R-Design models, the C30 bucket seats receive a Saab-like treatment with off-black Flex-tech trim and cushions and backrests in a contrasting cream leather. As you would expect, "R-Design" has been embossed into the front seatbacks and also appears on the steering wheel, through which you can view the blue-face instrument cluster supposedly inspired by the R performance models.
We would love to show you pictures of the reworked slim center console featuring a circular pattern that takes the "standard aluminum inlay to the next level," but Volvo does not yet have pictures of the aluminum trim available. The C30 R-Design also comes with sport pedals, a sport shifter, and dark sport floor mats with light seams.
As long as Volvo keeps the price down on R-Design accessories, it may have an easier time sustaining R-Design than it did R performance models. The C30 R-Design will be heading to dealerships in the second quarter of 2008.
