2009 Hyundai Sonata Preview

While the 2009 Hyundai Sonata is technically a refresh, an all-new interior, revised engines, and an enhanced suspension provide for some not-so-subtle tweaks to the Korean automaker's midsize sedan for the new model year.

Hyundai will offer three trim levels for its 2009 {{{Sonata}}}, beginning with the four-cylinder GLS base model. The midrange model gets the SE designation and is available with either an I-4 or V-6 engine -- this is the best choice for enthusiasts with its sportier suspension, rear spoiler, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and performance tires. The topline Limited model emphasizes luxury, with power-adjusting leather seats, a premium stereo system, power sunroof, and sliding center armrest all included as standard.

Both four- and six-cylinder engines are treated to more power and improved efficiency for the new model year. The standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine now makes 175 horsepower and 168 lb-ft of torque, while achieving fuel-economy ratings of 22 city/32 highway. A five-speed manual comes standard, while a five-speed automatic is an available option. Meanwhile, the 3.3-liter V-6 engine has been boosted to 249 horsepower and 229 lb-ft of torque. Hyundai states 19-city/29-highway fuel-economy ratings for its most powerful Sonata, which is available only with a five-speed automatic transmission.

Sonata GLS and Limited models also will receive a more responsive suspension, courtesy of revalved dampers, larger stabilizer bars, and lower control arms. Rear spring rates also have been raised in both models. The grippiest package has been reserved for the Sonata SE, which has even stiffer springs both front and rear, firmer strut valving at each corner, and even beefier anti-roll bars than on GLS and Limited models. The SE package is completed with 17-inch alloy wheels, while all 2009 Sonatas enjoy a quicker ratio steering rack for improved feel.

Despite this host of mechanical changes, most consumers will notice the changes to the 2009 Sonata's interior. A new center console and instrument cluster use elements found in Hyundai's own Veracruz crossover, while an auxiliary stereo input is now standard to connect portable media devices. Dual-zone climate control, two-stage seat warmers, and a touch-screen navigation unit are all available options for 2009 and a new interior color -- Cocoa Brown -- is featured for the new model year. Even the front cupholders have been updated with larger capacity. Exterior revisions are subtle, with new bumpers, lamps, grille, and wheels -- none dramatically departed from the 2008 model. Seven new exterior colors are available, however, along with chrome accents on the Limited model.

Though specific pricing details have not yet been announced, Hyundai has said the Sonata will retain a base price of under $20,000 when it hits showrooms later this month, making it highly competitive with the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry -- its primary competition.
