Getting the most from your time behind the wheel
By IntelliChoice
Car shoppers know a test drive is a critical. Left to their own devices, however, most just fiddle with the sound system while they take a quick lap of the nearest block. These consumers know they're supposed to be doing something to evaluate the vehicle, but they're not sure what. The following evaluation techniques employed by professional car reviewers will help you to get the most from your essential test drives.
Hitting dealer row
When visiting a dealership seeking a new or pre-owned vehicle, it helps to have a knowledgeable friend along to offer insights, temper your emotional responses with measured objectivity, and to help keep the salesperson at bay. Also, review the following paragraphs before heading out to serve as a reminder of the issues to focus on, rather than the distractions the salesperson may throw at you such as styling, horsepower, and incentives. While these are all valid considerations, the purpose of going to a dealership is to get your hands on the machinery and see how it feels.
Take advantage of the salesperson's intimate knowledge of the product, with the understanding that his or her perspective is profit driven. Be respectful of their time and declare your intention to drive, not buy. Thoroughly survey the vehicle, examining fit, finish, body panel gaps, and paint finish. Before you start the car, try opening each door and the trunk. Imagine loading groceries, luggage, and even sporting equipment, where appropriate. Is the cargo space adequate? Are there potentially marring sharp edges and corners? Do the seats fold/tilt as needed? Inspect the entire interior and sit in all the seats. Can you imagine sitting in the back seat for a long drive? Will your passengers or children (and their safety seats) fit? Finally, put yourself in the driver's seat and adjust the seat, steering wheel, and all mirrors to comfort. How well do your body and the seat fit together? Is the seat too firm, too soft, or just right?
