The early reputation of the company was established with the Silver Ghost cars, built from 1906-1925, with additional Ghosts being manufactured in a United States factory to help meet the high demand.
In 1973, the car manufacturing aspect of Rolls-Royce split off from her parent company under the name Rolls-Royce Motors. The company was acquired by Vickers in 1980 and sold again in 1998 to Volkswagen, however the Rolls-Royce aero-engine making company sold the rights to the Rolls-Royce name and logo to BMW, meaning that neither company could effectively make a Rolls-Royce car until they reached an agreement by which BMW bought an option on the trademarks while Volkswagen retained the rights to the Bentley.
