Later Ford Motors Company became a significant stock holder with a 15% stake. At the time Mazda was having troubles and Ford increased its holdings to a controlling stake of 33.39%.
With the Ford management the Mazda Company was turned around and in 2006, Mazda sold 1.25 million vehicles world wide. The Mazda car was first introduced into the United States in 1970. Oil and gas crisis of the 1970s helped all of the small car manufacturers and Mazda was one of them. After the gas crisis the company came again on hard times and Ford made a further investment in the company. Their big rivals have been their problem since that time. Toyota and Nissan consistently have a better share of the market
With the introduction of their new models in 2002 they have again gained some of its previous popularity. The car market is changeable and Mazda has seen both sides of this market.
