Mazda was started as Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., Ltd., in 1920. At that time the company was a manufacturer of machine tools. In 1931 the company moved into making automobiles. During WWII the company was involved in making weapons for the Japanese military. After the war the company formally became Mazda. Later Ford Motors Company became a significant stock holder with a 15% stake. At the time Mazda was having troubles and Ford increased its holdings to a controlling stake of 33.39%.
With the Ford management the Mazda Company was turned around and in 2006, Mazda sold 1.25 million vehicles world wide. Oil and gas crisis of the 1970s helped all of the small car manufacturers and Mazda was one of them.
