In 1941, Willys-Overland and Ford Motor Company were given a contract to manufacture the GPW (G - governmental, P - wheel base type, W - Willys-Overland), a reconnaissance vehicle, for the United States Army. After which, Willys-Overland registered the Jeep' trademark and started producing the first models of the current Jeep' range of Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV). Willys-Overland was bought in 1953 by Kaiser, and in 1954 became Kaiser-Jeep.
