The Components of Retail Gas Prices
The cost to produce and deliver gasoline to consumers everywhere includes the cost of crude oil to refiners, refinery processing costs, marketing and distribution costs, and finally the retail station costs and taxes. There are three main grades of gasoline: regular, mid-grade, and premium. Each grade of gasoline has a different octane level. Gas prices vary by grade, but the price between grades is normally constant.

Federal, state, and local taxes are a large portion of the retail gas price. Taxes account for approximately 27% of the cost of one gallon of gas. Federal excise taxes are roughly $0.18 per gallon of gas and State excise taxes are roughly $.021 per gallon of gas. Local county and city taxes can also have a significant impact on the retail price of gasoline at your local station. Refining costs and profits comprise about 15% of the retail price of gasoline.

Distribution, retail dealer costs, marketing, and profits together comprsie roughly 15% of the cost for one gallon of gasoline. The price you pay at the pump for a gallon of gasonline reflects the retailer’s purchase price for the gas as well as the other costs of operating the gas/service station. The price you pay at the pump also reflects the current local market conditions and additional factors such as the location of the gas station.
