The Pennsylvania Insurance Department has updated the auto insurance section of its Web site to help consumers who want to save money on coverage, Insurance Commissioner Joel Ario said today.
"Auto insurance coverage is required by law in Pennsylvania, so it's particularly important for consumers to have the information they need to make informed decisions when it comes to choosing coverage," Ario said. "While there are minimum, mandatory requirements that each policyholder must have, there are also quite a few options available for customizing your policy to suit your needs -- and keeping some more cash in your pocket."
"Fortunately, the cost of insuring your car remained fairly stable last year, but there are still plenty of ways to cut your premiums. Cost is always a factor when choosing an insurance policy, and auto insurance is no exception."
Choosing a plan with a higher deductible can reduce the up-front costs of a policy, but it will increase out-of-pocket expenses at the time of a claim. Dropping collision and/or comprehensive coverage on older cars can also generate savings, because insuring cars worth less than 10 times the amount you would pay for coverage is simply not cost-effective. However, consumers who choose to drop optional coverages should be aware that it may increase out-of-pocket expenses should they need to repair or replace a damaged vehicle.
"Also, be sure to ask your insurance company about discounts, such as those for student drivers with good grades and credit for mature drivers who complete a driver's safety course," Ario said. "These are just a few of the tips a consumer can learn from the new Web page."
The auto insurance section can be found at www.insurance.state.pa.us, choose "Publications" on the left-hand navigation bar, and then "Automobile Insurance."
"Our Web site is really a one-stop resource for drivers, full of helpful brochures, rate comparisons by geographic region, fact sheets, a glossary, FAQ section and links to other useful state Web sites," Ario said. "There are more than 200 insurance companies offering auto insurance coverage in Pennsylvania, so I encourage consumers to do some comparison shopping and find the company and the policy that is right for them."
