2010 Dodge Grand Caravan Review

Overview
All-new for 2008, the fifth-generation Dodge Grand Caravan is the latest version of the original minivan. With boxy styling reminiscent more of the original model rather than the jellybean look of more-recent revisions, innovations such as Stow-N-Go fold-into-the-floor second-row seats, kid-friendly features like Swivel-N-Go seating and a rear-seat entertainment system, available in-vehicle wireless internet, and a relatively-low asking price (not to mention the copious sums of cash Chrysler puts on the hood), the Grand Caravan aims to maintain Dodge's slice of the shrinking but still important minivan market.

However, the minivan is hampered by underpowered engines in lower-spec models in addition to sub par interior fit and finish while the competition continues to improve its A-game. The boxy styling isn't going to win any design awards either. Additionally, opting for the Swivel-N-Go seats, which allow the second-row seats to face rearward and add a compact table means they can no longer be folded into the floor and have to be removed to carry large items.

The Range

  • Bodystyles: Minivan
  • Engines: 3.3L V-6, 3.8L V-6, 4.0L V-6
  • Transmissions: 4-speed automatic, 6-speed automatic
  • Models: SE, SXT

What's New

The current-generation Dodge Grand Caravan is still fairly new, so the 2010 model receives only four minor tweaks. Active head restraints for front-row occupants are added as standard across the lineup, SE models receive three-zone climate control as a standard feature, SXT models with the 4.0L V-6 get a new 3.16 axle ratio, and the Security Group package adds a rear-obstacle detection display.

Exterior

The Grand Caravan's boxy design lends itself well to maximizing interior space, but this minivan can hardly be accused of being stylish. Dodge's signature crosshair grille separates it from its Chrysler Town & Country sibling.

Interior

The Grand Caravan's interior is loaded with cupholders and storage cubbyholes. Stow-N-Go second-row seats and power third row make creating a flat floor easy, but interior fit and finish is lacking..

Performance & Handling

Of the three engines offered on the Grand Caravan, only the 4.0L available on the SXT makes respectable power, 251 hp and 259 lb-ft of torque. It also achieves the best fuel economy of the range. The SE's 3.3L V-6 makes just 175 hp and 205 lb-ft of torque, the SXT's base 3.8L 197 hp and 230 lb-ft.

Safety

The Dodge Grand Caravan comes equipped with side curtain airbags for all three rows in addition to stability control and the requisite dual-front airbags. A rear-backup camera is optional along with a rear-park assist system.

EPA Fuel Economy

  • SE: 17 mpg city/24 mpg highway
  • SXT 3.8L: 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway
  • SXT 4.0L: 17 mpg city/25 mpg highway

You'll Like

  • Stow-n-Go seats
  • 4.0L's 25 mpg highway

You Won't Like
