The 2009 Audi S4 interior and exterior design has slightly changed from the previous generation S4. New front and rear bumpers offer a unique look, along with a new trunk lid with incorporated spoiler, rear LED lighting, aluminum mirrors and 18" wheels. The calipers feature Audi S4 logos while the sport seats will have unique color offerings to set it apart from the competition. S4 accents continue into the steering wheel, door sills, key fob and gauge cluster. An aggressive quad exhaust design completes the new look. -

The S4's basic exterior is derived from the A4. It has large front air intakes, and the side mirrors have aluminum accents. The power fabric top contains a heated glass rear window. The S4 convertible can hold four people. Backseat legroom is rather sparse, and trunk space is modest. Audi says the 2009 Audi S4 can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds when equipped with the six-speed manual gearbox. -

The convertible S4 enters its final year before a substantial redesign. The big V-8 engine sounds magical from the driver's seat and will be missed next year when the S4 moves to a supercharged V-6. Although it's heavy and the rear-seat space is small, the 2009 Audi S4 convertible is still a joy. -

Audi's high-performance AWD version of the A4 uses a smooth 340-hp, 4.2-liter V8 engine. A six-speed manual transmission is standard and a six-speed automatic is optional. In our tests, we found the ride stiff but not punishing. Handling was quite capable, but the 2009 Audi S4 understeered a bit too much at its limits. Audi claims it now splits the torque with a rear bias to reduce understeer. The interior is well-finished and nicely appointed, with comfortable and supportive leather Recaro sport seats. Wagon and convertible versions are available. The more powerful RS4 sedan produces 420 hp, and a convertible version will be available for 2008. Crash-test results for the sedan are impressive. -

Though small, the S4 is a powerhouse. The engine is a 340 horsepower double overhead cam 4.2 liter V8. There is a choice of transmissions, either a six-speed automatic or a six-speed manual, either with overdrive. Both have Audi's famous Quattro all-wheel drive.Compact or not, at a base price of $57,125 ($58,325 with automatic transmission) the 2009 Audi S4 is probably not the car the average family will buy for their high school or college kid, nor will it be the choice of starter car for most young families. In fact, I'm not sure just what the market for a luxury compact is, as those terms have always seemed a bit oxymoronic to me. But if, for whatever reason, you're in the market for a luxury compact, don't overlook the S4. As usual, even in a small car Audi delivers big. -
