The corporate headquarters of Kia Motors, the oldest car manufacturer in South Korea, is in the capital city of Seoul. It began manufacturing bicycles and steel tubing under the name of Kyungsung Precision in 1944. From there it went on to building motorcycles, trucks, and cars. By 1986, it had formed a partnership with Ford Motor Company, and was manufacturing vehicles based on the Mazda design. It expanded its automobile market beyond domestic use to Europe and Australia, and was introduced to the U.S. in 1992. The first four dealerships to sell to buyers in the U.S. were located in Portland, Oregon; however, Kia slowly expanded across the country. After suffering a financial setback with bankruptcy in 1997, the company was bought by Hyundai Motor Company in 1998, outbidding Ford. It established its first assembly plant in the U.S. in West Point, Georgia in October 2006. The company manufactures economical and practical passenger cars, vans, and commercial vehicles, and is a serious competitor in the worldwide automobile market."
