In 1941, Willys-Overland and Ford Motor Company were given a contract to manufacture the GPW (G - governmental, P - wheel base type, W - Willys-Overland), a reconnaissance vehicle, for the United States Army. After which, Willys-Overland registered the Jeep' trademark and started producing the first models of the current Jeep' range of Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV). Willys-Overland was bought in 1953 by Kaiser, and in 1954 became Kaiser-Jeep. In 1970, financial woes meant Kaiser-Jeep was purchased by American Motors (AMC), which from 1979 received funding from Renault. By 1987, the French car producer had financial troubles and was purchased by Chrysler Corporation. A year later, DiamlerChrysler Company LLC was formed with the union of Chrysler and Diamler-Benz. The company owns trademarks for Jeep' and its distinctive design for its seven-slot front grill. The Jeep' headquarters are in Toledo, Ohio, U.S.A., manufacturing a range of four-wheel drive Jeep' models that meet the needs of the adventurous as well as the family."
