A van is a shortened version of the word "caravan," meaning covered vehicle. The full-size van has a platform and power-train similar to trucks; however, it can be configured to transport cargo, passengers or both. Large and boxy, vans often have a very short hood and the engine block is contained within the passenger cabin. Minivans, on the other hand, are smaller than vans, but still have plenty of interior space.
