Volkswagen Passat Model Info

Available as a midsize sedan or wagon, the Volkswagen Passat has been a reliable and functional vehicle that offers class and luxury in an affordable package which makes it the perfect vehicle for families on the go.

A front-wheel driven vehicle, power for the Passat comes from a 2 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control capable of producing 200 horsepower and 2007 ft-lbs of torque. Fuel efficiency for the Volkswagen Passat is decent, with ratings of 19 mpg city and 28 mpg highway.

Both the sedan and wagon are available in a single “Komfort” trim which is well equipped with features such as alloy wheels, sunroof, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, leatherette vinyl upholstery, power heated front seats, eight-speaker sound system, in-dash CD changer, satellite radio, and chrome roof rails for the wagon. Other options available for the VW Passat include a variety of exterior styling packages and a hard-drive-based navigation system.

For safety the Passat is outfitted with a full complement of airbags, antilock brakes and stability control. On top of this it scores very highly in both crash and rollover tests making it a very safe vehicle.

Despite having a suspension tuned more for ride comfort instead of performance, the new Passat still provides an excellent balance between offering a comfortable ride and athletic handling dynamics.

Volkswagen Passat History

While it did debut in 1973, the Volkswagen Passat was not available in the United States until 1990. Since its United States debut, the Passat has gone through three design generations. Originally perceived as “a gateway vehicle for German luxury car fans who can’t yet swing one of the country’s premium nameplates,” it is now considered to bridge the gap between normal everyday family cars, and “financially out-of-reach luxury brands.” While older generations of the car have been available in a variety of trims and engine sizes, the VW Passat is currently only available in one trim and engine size.

A variant of the Passat known as the Passat R36 was launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2007. The R36 variant is powered by a 3.6 liter VR6 engine that is capable of producing 296 horsepower and 258 ft-lbs of torque. Unfortunately the Passat R36 is currently unavailable in the United States.

Another variant of the Volkswagen Passat, the Passat CC made its debut at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and is expected to be available soon. The CC which stands for comfort coupe is a 4-door coupe version of the Passat, and is intended to bridge the gap between the Passat and the Europe-only Phaeton sedan. The CC is loaded with various sport and luxury features such 17 or 18-inch wheels, Dynamic Drive Control with electrically adjustable suspension, optional lane assist steering, Automatic Distance Control and more while power for the Passat CC comes from either a 197-horsepower, 2 liter TSI turbo four engine, or a 295 horsepower 3.6-liter FSI V6 engine.
