The 4-door SUV is Mitsubishi?s answer to the industry trend toward compact crossover SUVs with the versatility of an SUV and the economy and size of a car.
The Airtrek name, designed to invoke feelings of free, lighthearted adventuring, was replaced with the Outlander name, which was supposed to invoke much the same feelings of travel and adventure. The Outlander was originally given a modified grille and headlights and manufactured parallel to the Airtrek, until 2005, when the second generation of Outlander was born and the two SUVs merged in most markets including Japan. The Outlander is doing well in terms of US sales, and Japan hopes for even better success with this crossover SUV in the United States market.
