Kia Spectra Model Info

A hatchback version of the Kia Spectra, the Spectra5 and its brother the Spectra are a vast improvement over the original Spectras introduced in 2000.

Unlike the Spectra which is offered in three trim levels, the Kia Spectra5 is only offered in one trim level: the SX. The SX is the highest trim level of all Spectras and comes equipped with basic features like air conditioning, six-speaker CD stereo, full power accessories, and keyless entry, as well as other extras such as an upgraded interior and exterior trim, firmer suspension tuning, and bigger wheels and tires.

Power for the new Spectra5 comes from a 138-horsepower, 2-liter four-cylinder engine. The Spectra5’s engine is extremely fuel-efficient getting 24 mpg city, and 32 mpg highway. A five-speed manual transmission is standard with a 4-speed automatic transmission option available.

Despite its small size, the Kia Spectra5 can have adequate amounts of room thanks to the fold down seating and the numerous storage cubbies located throughout the vehicle.

Consumers worried about the reliability can rest easily thanks to Kia offering a five-year/60,000-mile basic warranty and a 10-year/100,000 mile drive train warranty for the Spectra5.

Kia Spectra History

The successor to the North American Kia Sephia, the Kia Spectra was introduced to the Korean and United States market for the 2000 model year, with the Spectra5 being released as a separate model in 2005.

When it was originally introduced the Kia Spectra hatchback and sedan were described as unrefined, underpowered, and cheaply constructed, reinforcing the cheap and poor-quality image American consumers gave to Korean cars. However the current generation Spectra and Spectra5 has changed this perspective on American cars and have gone on to become Kia’s top-selling vehicles in the United States.

A vehicle named the Kia Forte made its debut at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show is speculated to be a successor to the Spectra. The Forte which is expected to be available as either a 2-door coupe or 4-door sedan, however there is currently no information whether a hatchback version of the Forte will be produced to replace the Kia Spectra5.
