Ford Edge Model Info

Described as a premium mid-size crossover SUV, the Ford Edge offers an excellent package for family-oriented drivers. The Edge offers SUV-like functionality with sedan-like handling and bridges the gap between minivans and truck-based SUVs.

The new Ford Edge is currently available in four trims: SE, SEL, Limited, and Sport. The SE is the base model, equipped with standard features such as air-conditioning, 17-inch alloy wheels, full power accessories, stability control, and antilock brakes. The SEL and Limited trims are a step up from the SE offering a few extra luxuries. The Sport and Limited trims add to the list of options, coming with 20-inch wheels, unique bodywork, and faux suede upholstery.

The Edge is currently powered by a 3.5 liter V6 engine combined with a six-speed automatic transmission capable of producing 265 horsepower, and 250 ft-lbs of torque. All trims of the Ford Edge are available in either front-wheel or all-wheel drive configurations. Fuel-efficiency depends on the drivetrain with all-wheel drive models rated at 15 mpg city and 22 mpg highway while the forward-wheel drive models are rated at 16 mpg city and 24 mpg highway.

Safety equipment for the new Edge includes dual front airbags, front side impact airbags, side curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes, traction control, electronic stability control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Combined with the Edge’s excellent performance in National Highway Traffic Safety Administration crash tests, makes the Ford Edge a very safe vehicle.

For the current generation a "Sport" appearance package is available which offers a standard all-body colored trim, and 20-inch wheel with 22-inch wheels available as an optional factory upgrade.

Ford Edge History

The Ford Edge has gone through few improvements and revisions since its debut in 2007. Consumers looking at purchasing a used Edge should stay away from first-year models due to the Edge needing a 160 feet to come to a complete stop from 60 mph while other vehicles in its class are capable of stopping in only 120-130 feet. First-year models of the Edge are also missing a powered liftgate and navigation system. Those who are interested in the “Sport” appearance package will have to look into 2009 models if they wish to get the 22-inch wheels, and all-body colored trim.

More fuel-efficient versions of the Edge are currently in the works with a hybrid version of the Edge expected to debut in 2010. A HySeries Ford Edge, which will be powered by a lithium-ion battery pack that is charged either through plug-in charging or through a hydrogen fuel cell is also in development, however there is currently no word when the HySeries Edge will be available.
