Chevrolet Suburban Model Info

A large and powerful SUV, the Chevrolet Suburban is one of the oldest automobile nameplates in the United States. The Suburban successfully combines passenger and cargo carrying capacity with truck-like towing capabilities. The Chevy Suburban has enough interior space to carry up to 9 passengers and still have a full-sized cargo area. If properly equipped, the Suburban can have a towing capacity of almost 10,000 pounds.

This Chevy SUV is currently available in two series: the light ½-ton 1500, and heavy-duty ¾-ton 2500. Both series use a V8 engine with the 1500 using a 5.3 liter engine producing 310 horsepower, and 340 ft-lb of torque, while the 2500 series is equipped with a 6.0 liter engine that makes 352 horsepower and 382 ft-lb of torque. A 6.0 liter V8 option is available for the 1500 series that produces 366 horsepower and 376 ft-lb of torque. Aside from the two series, the Suburban is also available in three different trims: base-level LS, better equipped LT, and the luxurious LTZ.

Despite its size, the Chevrolet Suburban can be quite quick, being able to accelerate from 0-60 in less than 9 seconds when it is unloaded. The Suburban also offers a comfortable and smooth ride thanks to its coil-over shocks up front and five-link setup in the back, combined with its rack-and-pinion steering, while the Suburban’s stability control system gives it responsive steering and excellent handling.

The current generation of Suburban is loaded with a variety of safety advancements including: front seat side airbags, stability control, and side curtain airbags for all three rows. Combined with these safety devices, the Chevy also scores fairly well in NHTSA crash testing.

Chevrolet Suburban History

The history of the Chevrolet Suburban can be traced all the way back to 1936. Originally built on a ½-ton truck frame as a station wagon, the Suburban later became a 2-door carryall before evolving into a truck primarily used for rural and commercial uses, until becoming the full-sized SUV that we see on the roads today.

Chevy Suburbans are highly praised for their versatility and durability, being able to be used for a variety of purposes from, rural and commercial uses, to transporting large amounts of cargo, to towing, to even recreational uses. It is because of this large amount of flexibility that the Suburban offers that gives it such a high resale value as well as making it one of General Motors’ most profitable vehicles. In fact, the Chevrolet Suburban is so versatile that it has been adopted for a variety of uses, from being the vehicle of choice for law enforcement, and United States Secret Service personnel, to being an excellent choice for limousine conversions.
